Who Ubiquiti are
Ubiquiti was founded in 2005 and is headquartered in New York. It sells wireless and networking equipment worldwide, and it is listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
Almost everything people mean by Ubiquiti now is UniFi: access points, switches, security gateways and the controller software that manages the lot. There is also airMAX, the long range point to point wireless that links two buildings without a trench between them.
Why the controller is the whole point
One access point is a device you configure once and forget. Fifteen of them across a hotel or a school is a job, and the day one drops out the problem is finding which one. The UniFi controller puts every access point, switch and port on a single screen, so a saturated uplink, a dead access point or a guest password change are all things you deal with from where you are sitting.
The controller runs on a small appliance on site or on a machine you already have, and it is included rather than licensed per device, which is the part that separates it from the enterprise brands on price.
Linking two buildings without digging
A warehouse across the yard, a second block, a site office two hundred metres from the main building. Trenching fibre between them is expensive and often impossible on a rented plot. A pair of airMAX radios with line of sight between them does the same job in an afternoon.
It needs clear line of sight and it needs mounting properly, which is most of what decides whether the link is solid in the rain or not.
