Who MikroTik are
MikroTik was founded in 1996 and is based in Riga, Latvia. It makes routers, switches and wireless equipment, and it writes RouterOS, the operating system that runs on all of it.
The hardware goes from a unit that fits in your hand to a rack mounted router with 10 gigabit fibre ports, and the same operating system runs on every part of it. What you learn on the small one still applies on the big one.
What it is good at, simply said
Routing, bandwidth control, hotspot billing, site-to-site VPNs, and firewall rules to a level of granularity that most equipment at this price does not provide. It is the foundation on which internet service providers across East Africa are built, and the clearest statement of what it can do.
Specifically for a camera install, it comes up if you have a bunch of sites to link over VPN, or if someone needs to be able to get to recorders remotely without opening them up to the whole internet.
Getting it set up
RouterOS hands you the controls instead of making the decisions for you, and that is where the capability comes from. It is equipment you configure to the site rather than plug in and walk away from.
That part is our job. Our technicians are trained on this equipment and configuration is part of the installation, so it arrives set up for what your site actually does. If it is going somewhere nobody will touch again after handover, say so and we will build it that way from the start.
