Who Centurion are
Centurion Systems was founded in 1986 and builds its products in Johannesburg. It sells into 72 countries and turns forty in 2026. The range is sliding and swing gate motors, boom barriers, remotes, receivers and access control.
Everything is designed and manufactured in South Africa, and the company recently brought production back from Asia. For us that matters in one specific way: parts for a motor sold five years ago are still obtainable, which is not a given in gate automation.
Why the model number matters more than the brand
A gate motor is sized to the gate. The D3, D5, D10 and D20 exist because a light residential sliding gate and a heavy industrial one need different machines, and fitting the small one to the big gate is the single most common reason a motor burns out early. The weight of the gate, how far it travels and how many times a day it cycles are the three numbers that decide it.
The D5 Evo is the one you will see most often on Tanzanian estates, and it is the model in most of our own installation photography.
What actually kills gate motors here
Power. Dirty supply, surges and lightning take out more control boards than mechanical wear ever does, and a motor left on an unprotected supply through a rainy season is a motor you will replace. Surge protection and correct earthing are cheap next to a new controller.
After that it is the gate itself. A gate running on worn rollers or a bent track drags, the motor works harder than it was sized for, and the motor gets blamed for the gate's problem.
