Who Hikvision are
Hikvision was founded in 2001 and is based in Hangzhou, China. It makes cameras, network and digital video recorders, alarm equipment and access control, and it has grown into one of the biggest security manufacturers in the world.
For a buyer in Tanzania the size matters for a practical reason rather than a flattering one. A range this wide means the same brand covers a two camera shop and a fifty camera warehouse, the firmware and the phone app behave the same way across all of it, and parts are still available in three years. That is not true of the cheaper unbranded recorders sold a few doors down in Kariakoo.
The two technologies worth understanding
ColorVu cameras record in full colour at night instead of switching to black and white infrared. On a shop front or a yard, that is the difference between seeing that a man in a dark jacket walked past and seeing that he was wearing a red shirt. It costs more and it needs a little ambient light to work well, so it is worth it at the entrance and usually not worth it in a store room.
AcuSense tells the difference between a person or a vehicle and everything else that moves. A palm tree in the wind, a cat, rain lit up by the infrared, all of that stops triggering alerts. If you have ever turned off motion alerts because your phone would not stop buzzing, this is the feature that fixes it.
Counterfeit stock, which is a real problem here
Hikvision is copied more than any other brand in this market, and the fakes have got good enough that the box will not tell you. What tells you is where you bought it.
